India has crossed nearly 23 crore demat accounts by mid-2026, with new openings running at roughly 25-30 lakh per month through FY26. Yet depository and exchange data indicate only about 1 in 4 accounts trades actively, around 4.5-5 crore, leaving a large base of dormant first-time investors.
